Learn From Professional Surfers
Andrew Karr
Founder & Head Instructor
Andrew rode his first wave in the Hamptons when he was 7 years old. Although he has gone on to become a world-renowned big wave rider, the beaches and cobblestone points of eastern Long Island still hold a special place in his heart and still offer some of his favorite waves in the world to surf when they turn on. Growing up surfing in the Hamptons has given Andrew a deep understanding of how the ocean in eastern Long Island behaves, and he will apply that knowledge to make sure that you stay safe and ride the best waves of any given day. Along with his big wave surfing career, Andrew has taught surf lessons for 9 years in the Hamptons and Hawaii. From standing up on your first wave to pulling into your first barrel, Andrew knows how to help you take the next step at every point of your surfing journey and make sure that you are having fun along the way.
Lucy Short
Head Instructor
Lucy has been a great addition to legend surf co since she joined in 2022. Along with being an avid surfer who grew up surfing east Hampton and montauks many sandbars and pointbreaks, Lucy has also spent multiple seasons working as an east Hampton village lifeguard.
Austin Kalama
Head Instructor
Austin grew up on Maui with his father and legendary big wave surfer, Dave Kalama. Dave and his tow partner Laird Hamilton invented tow-in surfing (a method of surfing where the rider is pulled into the wave by a jet ski) at Maui’s Pe’ahi (AKA Jaws) and starred in surfing films like “Riding Giants.”
He and Laird’s work catapulted the rapid progression of big wave surfing over the past few decades, and Austin has surely carried his torch. Austin is one of Hawaii’s most respected up-and-coming big wave riders and has himself ridden some eye-opening waves at Jaws. Austin is truly a complete waterman, and in addition to surfing, he is a world-class foil board rider (a foil is a board that catches the wave’s energy with an underwater hydrofoil and rises above the water) and stands up paddler.
Richie Maio
Head Instructor
Richie splits his time between lifeguarding for the east Hampton town, and teaching people how to surf with us at legend surf co. Richie is a capable waterman and skilled surfer, who like Lucy, has experience lifeguarding at all of the very beaches where we teach our lessons. That experience shows in his intimate knowledge of all of the local sandbars.
Calvin Jacob
Head Instructor
Calvin Jacob, along with his twin brother christian, went through surf school himself 10 years ago. They were exemplary students, as they both have become high level surfers themselves. Having the experience of going through surf school in the Hamptons gives Calvin and Christian a unique insight into how to offer the best experience possible to their students.
